Tinkoff-Saxo owner Tinkov is now on the lookout of a “boring & meticulous” manager such as Brailsford for his squad.
The Russian team has just fired its long-standing manager & former owner Bjarne Riis and hence the search for an able suitor & Tinkov is eyeing on somebody like the Sky manager.
The new manager would be disclosed the following week. A few days back, a statement from Tinkoff confirmed that the squad had parted with Bjarne based on mutual agreement.
Riis and Tinkov had serious arguments over Tinkoff’s failure at Tirreno-Adriatico. Afterwards, Bjarne came back to his home rather than guiding Peter Sagan at Milan-San Remo & Contador at Volta Catalunya.
“Team management isn’t just about issuance of instructions from car radio & casting spell over riders where Riis was unparallel”, stated Tinkov over social media.
“Team management is a monotonous boring office work. It is urgently needed to get a boring & meticulous manager such as Dave Brailsford.”
Omar Piscina, the former sports director of Tinkoff Credit squad, could be a probable replacement. Another Italian, Tinkoff’s CEO Stefano Feltrin, has been noted as well.
Post winning 1996 Tour, Riis managed Home-Jack & Jones back in 1999 & took charge as it evolved into CSC & Saxo Bank. He sold his squad to Russian Oleg Tinkov in 2013 December for 6 million Euros. The 50-year-old Danish became the team manager instead on a contract of 1 million Euros annually.
Over time, Riis mentored stars such as Alberto Contador, Fränk & Andy Schleck, Fabian Cancellara & Carlos Sastre
He also had his quarter of doping issues. He admitted of taking to drugs during his own Tour title & the case is still under investigation.
However, Riis has stayed tight-lipped regarding his departure from former team.
