Elinor Barker, the new cycling sensation from Cardiff has stated that she is strongly focused on world domination with the Minsk Track World Championships dated to start off from 20th of February, 2013. Barker is in the place of Jo Rowsell, who has currently decided to concentrate on road.
Eighteen year old Elinor would be teaming up with Dani King and Laura Trott in the GB women’s squad for Minsk Track World Championships 2013. Rowsell’s absence has led to a wide door for Elinor who seems to be eagerly waiting to showcase her skills in the Worlds. This would be the 2nd time for Barker to ride with GB women’s cycling team since her first appearance at the tracks of Glasgow World Cup, last November. She is one among the 4 Welsh sprinters in GB squad alongside female cyclist Becky James & Sam Harrison and Owain Doull from the men’s squad.
When questioned about her participation in Minsk Track World Championship, Barker stressed on a keen urge for strong display at Minsk. “Rowsell is an awesome rider and hence I am sad that she won’t be playing now. But again, the situation has brought enormous opportunity for me. I am certainly placing myself under huge pressure”, remarked Barker. However, she even expressed her anxiety on the stepping out of Rowsell, a seasoned sprinter. She is anxious regarding the maintenance of high team standard that led to a World & Olympic double for GB last year.
“The expectation while racing for GB is always to win, specifically, when one is in Women’s GB team pursuit. Thus, it’s a huge space to fill up”, added in Barker while stating about her worries about Rowsell’s absence in the squad. “I have taken part in Worlds earlier, but it’s a huge step up when I am racing as one of the senior members”.
